RUBELLITE
Rubelite (also spelled Rubellite) is a deep purplish-pink to purplish-red variety of the colourful Tourmaline family of gemstones.
One of the most valuable varieties of Tourmaline, Rubelite is highly prized for it colour, with the best being those that display a strong, bright, glowing deep pink. The next most important factor is their clarity. Perfectly clear Rubelite is extremely rare, so Rubelite gemstones with slight clarity imperfections are still valuable.
Colour palette: There is a wide range of colour among Rubelite tourmalines, from deep red to shocking pink; while some are very light, others are so dark that the red can only be seen when the stone is held against the light.
Sources: Key sources of Rubelite are Afghanistan, Brazil, East Africa, Nigeria, Mozambique, Madagascar and the USA.
More information about Rubelite: While Rubelite itself is not afforded the honour of being a specific birthstone or wedding anniversary gemstone, Tourmaline is the Birthstone of October and the 8th Wedding Anniversary gemstone. However, Rubelite, or Pink Tourmaline, is said to inspire love, spirituality and creativity, and to give wisdom and enhance one's willpower.
Similar gemstones: Red Tourmaline is similar to Ruby, Spinel and Garnet, while there are similarities between Pink Tourmaline and Kunzite, Pink Topaz, Morganite, Pink Sapphire. Tourmaline’s resemblance to other gemstones has caused, and still does cause, confusion. One famous case of mistaken identity being that of the rubies in the Russian Crown jewels from the 17th Century turning out to be in fact Rubelite tourmalines.
